Decorating Cinder Block Walls

Times are changing in dorm room decorating, BUT there are still older dorms with those concrete block walls. BLECH! Most colleges will not allow you to paint them, so what are some other options?

I have brought wall decals up before, but it’s worth mentioning them again in the context of dorm decorating. They are such a great way to decorate a space. They stick to almost everything, including cinder block. I have some up in our rental apartment and my mother was blown away by how cool they are, and how they really look like they were painted. The above picture is of a dorm wall with a decal, and it looks great.

Another suggestion is to buy wall decals in a pattern that will look like you wallpapered the wall. My favorite site for wall decals is Design With A Z, because you can choose from tons of colors and they have wonderful customer service.

Hide a cinder block wall by hanging curtains along the wall. Mount a curtain rod to the ceiling and go with a fun patterned curtain panel. Make sure they are long enough and cover the whole wall. Add additional panels to get more of a draped feel.

A bright colored screen is a great option for hiding an unsightly wall. You can put this behind furniture or have it free standing on its own. Open framework design is best, as it adds some pattern to the space and draws your attention out and away from the cinder block wall.

Good luck and please send us your pictures of your dorm room!
